“An insight into more than just photography”
Both being keen photographers, my son and I signed up for the early morning workshop. Getting my teenager up at half four was the worst bit but once that was over things started to look up. The minibus picked us up a little late but Etienne had already been in email communication to warn us. Our first coffee of the day was very welcome as Etienne tried to get to know the group a little better. Clearly he was prepared to go through basics such as aperture/shutter speed/iso and composition, but it appeared that we all had some photographic experience so he quickly moved on. Instead he focused on the nitty-gritty of getting the perfect shot, learning some basic language, talking to your subject, thinking about light, etc. All helpful and interesting stuff; I think we all learnt something which goes to show what a talent Etienne is.
Photography was only a part of it, however. Discussing local culture, meeting locals, watching the catch coming in, boat trips and coffee make for an interesting early morning for anyone and I would recommend this even if you are just using your camera phone and you are not really interested in photography (shh! – it’ll be our secret). See a different side of Hoi An – get on a ‘photography’ workshop.
